Research (Dissertation) Committee
Approval is required 6 months before your defense.
We recommend you submit your form 7 months before your defense.
The form may take up to 4 weeks to process and the six months is counted from the date the form is approved by the University Graduate School, not from the date you submit it.
Clinical students must also complete the Clinical area-specific dissertation proposal form.
Instructions: This is an online form/document (eDoc) available at https://one.iu.edu/task/iupui/phd-nomination-of-research-committee. You must attach a 1-2 page summary of the proposed research and, if appropriate, any protocols (IRB, human subjects, animal use, biohazards, etc.) Double majors must identify co-chairs (a chair for each major). If the membership of yoru committee or the title of your dissertation changes, you will have to submit a Change of Resarch Committee eDoc.
Four members are required (for double majors and single majors). All committee members must be members of the University Graduate School and at least half must be full members. The 4 members must be IU faculty. Members from outside IU may serve on the committee (a copy of their CV is required) but cannot replace the required 4 IU faculty. A list of approved graduate faculty is available at http://graduate.indiana.edu/faculty-staff/membership.shtml.
Committee members approve the electronic Nomination of Research Committee form. A 1 to 2 page summary of the proposed research must be attached to the electronic document/form (eDoc). You must also attach any relevant protocol forms (e.g., IRB or animal use, etc.) While the eDoc requires only a 1-2 page prospectus, your Research Committee usually will require a longer, more detailed, proposal. There is not a form for your proposal meeting.
Change of Research Committee
If you need to add or remove someone from your committee, change the title of your dissertation, etc., you must complete the Change of Research Committee eDoc. The six month rule does not apply when making changes.
Tracking Your Forms
It is the student's responsibility to track eDocs. You can track the progress of your forms by searching for "Track My SIS eDocs" in One.IU.Edu or by using these instructions.
